How to Reference:

One of the hardest things about adjusting to university style writing is referencing. " 75% of students have a negative perception of referencing" according to Anita Stuhmcke ,2015. Many students get frustrated over it but once you learn how to do it you will never worry about it again!

Why Reference?
"Referencing means you will communicate knowledge accurately." (Stuhmcke ,2015)

HOW TO REFERENCE PROPERLY:

Referencing layout and styles depend on the source of the information and the style of referencing you are using.

At Swinburne, and many other Universities we use the Harvard Referencing Style. The below chart is highly useful in showing what you need to write where in text references and in your reference list at the end of your paper.

Look at the source of your information as a starting point.  Look in the table below to see what matches the source of what you want to reference.

WOULD YOU PREFER A QUICKER ONLINE IINTERACTIVE OPTION?

Of course you can check back to this table or something similar, but you can also do this interactively online too at http://www.swinburne.edu.au/library/referencing/quick-guide/swinburne-harvard/.

Simply click on the type of information , what information you have and it shows you how to lay out the reference in text and in the final reference list of your project.

ARE YOU STUDYING AT SWINBURNE?

If you are also a Swinburne University student, you can visit the library for a free, referencing workshop. See the link below.
